People share how they ‘fixed’ wrong occasion greeting cards and it’s hilarious
It’s not easy to find the right words for those big events in life, but luckily greeting cards usually do the job for us. However, that can backfire, when you accidentally buy a card that’s completely inappropriate for the occasion. These card givers decided to work with what they had, leading to these improvised “fixed” greetings.
Sorry, sort of…
What do you say to someone who’s house burned down? Well, maybe not this. Out of all the cards out there, one making a joke about a birthday cake being on fire seems like the least suitable to give.
Sorry, sort of…
But perhaps Alex didn’t have a better card on hand, and no time to buy a new one and therefore (wrongly) figured this one was better than none.

Work with what you have
This creative young lady didn’t have a card for her friend’s birthday, but what she did have was a sharpie and a card for a baby turning one. We have to admit she did a pretty good job on this one.
Work with what you have
Sure it’s maybe a little immature in its design, and the birthday girl surely realized right away the original card actually said “You’re turning 1”. But hopefully her friend’s clever redesign just made her smile.

Desperate times
Sometimes you really intend to get the best birthday card possible, and even take the time to go buy a brand new one. But what are you supposed to do when the store is sold out of all the ones that could fit?
Desperate times
This 30-year-old man was getting a birthday card for his dear mother no matter what, so he simply, got this one, and changed a few details. Writing “boy” and drawing on a beard on the little girl probably didn’t fool anyone, but it’s the thought that counts!

The least romantic boyfriend ever
We’re not sure what kind of boyfriend would buy a black condolence card for his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day, but probably one who’s not too worried about getting dumped over it.
The least romantic boyfriend ever
Clearly his other half just found it funny, as she shared the whole thing online. Perhaps their dark sense of humor is the glue that keeps them together. All we can say is we wouldn’t have taken the joke as well as she did.

Barbie card for dad
Making fun of your dad never gets old, no matter how old he gets. This dad’s twenty-something children thought a Barbie themed birthday card for a five-year-old would be perfect for him.
Barbie card for dad
All they needed to do was cross over the “girl” and add a 0 next to that 5, and then this unique Barbie card for grownups was ready! And in all honesty, with all the ageism out there, it’s nice to remind good old dad it can actually be fun to be 50.

It’s what the dollar store had
This is a pretty unusual card to find in a dollar store of all places, however this man was on the hunt for a Mother’s Day card, not a first communion card.
It’s what the dollar store had
But instead of going somewhere else to look for something more appropriate, he decided to change a few words here and there and just go with it. At least this one for sure stood out among all the more traditional greetings his mother received that year.

One word makes a big difference…
Sisters. It almost seems like they were put on this earth to ridicule, tease and make fun of you. And they can always be counted on to keep you humble, even when you’ve reached some pretty bragworthy milestones.
One word makes a big difference…
This woman had finally finished her Phd, and her sister congratulated her with a card that immediately reminded her of the things she hasn’t achieved yet…All those years working hard to get that PhD, and in a second her sister managed to diminish that excitement.

Committed to the dollar store
This man and his wife had agreed they would only get each other greeting cards from the dollar store. We’re not sure why, but we do know it made their options pretty limited…
Committed to the dollar store
When it was her 30th birthday, the husband realized the store didn’t have any cards for that age, so he had to settle for this one – even though it’s for a three-year-old. The farm animals are definitely a little ridiculous, but we love how he made up a new word: threety.

Have the best surgery ever!
Keeping spirits high during difficult times is important, and perhaps that’s why this card giver thought this cheerful card (that’s obviously meant for a birthday) would be a good choice for her friend. But we can’t help but think the person receiving it wasn’t sure how to react.
Have the best surgery ever!
The exclamation mark, the cake, the candles – it’s all a little too happy for something as serious as brain surgery. Maybe someone should have told this friend a get well soon card would have been just fine.

Condolences on your birthday
Unsurprisingly, this card was given to a young man by his brother. The surprising part is the fact he even bothered to replace the words “sorry” and “loss” with “happy” and “birthday”. The brothers we know would have left the original print as it was, and thought the whole thing was hilarious.
Condolences on your birthday
And we have to admit, it is pretty funny to give your sibling a condolence card for their birthday. What are brothers for, if not to make you feel unappreciated?

Should have read the card
We can basically hear every mom ever read this card out loud. On the one hand, it’s a typical mom move to have the best intentions to buy a thoughtful Christmas card, but then not even read it to make sure it’s a good fit. On the other hand, it’s also very like a mom to readily admit the mistake – but give the card anyway.
Should have read the card
It honestly doesn’t even matter, as you can tell just from this card alone Danni is a truly loved daughter.

A Dalmatian themed Christmas card is hard to find
Ian had an ambitious idea, but as so many card givers on this list he had to compromise, and improvise, in the end. Knowing his mother loves the movie 101 Dalmatians, he wanted to get her a 101 Dalmatian themed Christmas card.
A Dalmatian themed Christmas card is hard to find
But unsurprisingly, such a thing doesn’t exist. So instead he found one for a child turning two, and decided to make it work. It was a sweet gesture Ian, but “who’s turning Christmas!” makes zero sense…

Engaged or turning two?
The little rhyme is pretty cute, and the card would have been perfect to give a toddler who is turning two. For an engagement – not so much. And we can’t help but think this friend could have maybe gone the extra little mile to get a more suitable card.
Engaged or turning two?
Another option could have been to cover the preprinted part with heart stickers, so it would have been less obvious how last minute this card choice was.

Another way to say Merry Christmas
This guy was buying a gift voucher for his contribution to Secret Santa at work, and didn’t notice the cashier put it in a Happy birthday card instead of a Merry Christmas one. Not a problem a sharpie can’t fix, he thought.
Another way to say Merry Christmas
Christmas is indeed Jesus’s birthday, even though most Christmas cards don’t mention this obvious fact. Whatever co-worker got this gift probably did a double take at first, but anyone with the slightest sense of humor would start laughing the second after.

A wedding card they’ll never forget
This might be one of the most ambitious wrong occasions greeting cards on this list. Shawn was determined to make this Christmas card work as a card to congratulate his dear roommate on getting married. In order to achieve his goal he had to change quite a few things in the text, but it actually turned out both hilarious and very personal.
A wedding card they’ll never forget
Richard and Bobbie will surely treasure this one forever, as the most unique congratulations card they received on their wedding day.

I said baby shower, not birthday…
This woman made the mistake of sending her scatter brain husband to buy a baby shower themed gift bag, without specifying what that really means. So what she got was a bag saying happy birthday.
I said baby shower, not birthday…
With no time to go get another bag, she quickly made the necessary adjustments so the bag would be somewhat more appropriate for the occasion. Hopefully the cute baby clothes and toys in that gift bag made up for the slightly strange wording on it.

Prankster girlfriend
This girl is maybe not a natural romantic, more like a silly jokester. But in her own, special way she still wanted to acknowledge Valentine’s Day and give her boyfriend a sweet little card.
Prankster girlfriend
This card is pretty great because it’s a birthday card that has nothing to do with birthdays, and she then turned that into a Valentine’s Day card. The whale joke isn’t even funny, but hey at least she got it for really cheap at Goodwill.

Minimal effort
The guy who gave this card to his sibling might be more in need of a college education than they are…Hooray you’re college doesn’t make any sense grammatically, but we get what he was trying to say.
Minimal effort
Going to college is a big rite of passage, and definitely one you deserve to be congratulated for, especially by your proud family members. And what are siblings for if not to make halfhearted efforts when celebrating your achievements?

Technically accurate
This woman was looking forward to turning 30, since it’s usually a milestone your significant other will make sure to celebrate a little more than just any birthday. But apparently her husband couldn’t find one single 30th birthday card in the entire city.
Technically accurate
Technically yes, she is three decades, so this edited card for a one-year-old does kind of work. But it most likely also made his wife feel old, which isn’t something you want to be reminded of when leaving your twenties behind forever.

Maybe buy a get well soon card next time
What kind of greeting card do you get for someone who has been the victim of a terrible crime? There is no simple answer to that, but we suspect a birthday card with Fonzie from Happy Days giving the thumbs up, isn’t the ideal choice.
Maybe buy a get well soon card next time
A get well soon card, or a thinking of you one, seems a little more appropriate for someone who is in a hospital bed and most likely not feeling too great.

Thanks Dad
This young man was turning 23 and among all the pretty birthday cards, this one showed up in the pile – from his dad. Considering how old his son is, we’re not sure what prompted this man to buy a card for a two-year-old.
Thanks Dad
Perhaps he didn’t want to admit he forgot his own son’s birthday, and quickly went over the old gift drawers at home to see what was laying around. Adding a 3 made this one work, somewhat.

Recycled b-day card
When you realize at checkout you don’t actually have enough money to buy the card you wanted, you have no choice but get creative. And when it’s your friend’s birthday, showing up empty handed is not an option. Better instead to recycle an old card you have at home, even if it happens to be for something else than a birthday.
Recycled b-day card
It’s You Birthday is close enough, and this girl also made the effort to stay within the color scheme of the original card. Not too shabby.

Love from aunt Laura
We actually think this girl is pretty lucky. Our aunts can barely remember our names, let alone our birthdays. Her aunt Laura clearly cares for her young niece, even if she didn’t get the perfect card for her special day.
Love from aunt Laura
It’s the thought that counts when it comes to family, and the fact that Laura used an old Ester card to wish her niece a happy birthday really doesn’t take away from how sweet she was to even remember it.

A little insensitive
Sometimes it’s the store that messes up, not the person buying the card. This shopper was browsing through the sympathy cards section, and came across this very strange condolence card.
A little insensitive
Losing a loved one to a terminal illness can indeed feel like a countdown of sorts. But hardly one where you exclaim yay at the finish line. Hopefully the next person looking for a condolences card in this store was as attentive as the shopper who took the picture.

Special Easter card
Easter can be an emotional time? This is news to us, but hopefully not to the person who received this card. Perhaps they have personal reasons as to why Easter is so emotional for them. Or perhaps these two share a running joke about Family Guy, or wrong occasion gift cards.
Special Easter card
Either way, this one is as random as it’s funny, and we can’t help but wish our friends were this goofy when creating personal gift cards for us.

One important detail
So close but still so far… This woman couldn’t help but burst out laughing when she saw the Valentine’s Day card her dad bought for her mom. The man definitely got the occasion right, and it’s a very lovely card too. But he missed one small detail.
One important detail
On this specific Valentine’s Day card, there are actually two women pictured. But instead of getting another card, he just drew a little beard on one of them and voila – problem solved.

Happy father’s day!
This dad actually loved the creative Father’s Day card he got from his sons Alex and Nate, and he has good reason to. He clearly raised two sons who both have a sense of humor, and a way with words.
Happy father’s day!
Despite this being a Christmas card originally, it works surprisingly well after the boys’ careful small edits. And the part about the love going to daddy dearest was hopefully not too offensive to their mom.

Awkward Secret Santa
Secret Santa is a fun game played at many offices, but since you don’t actually know who will receive your gift most tend to keep the attached card pretty casual and neutral. But this guy used a more personal card intended for a grandmother, not a colleague.
Awkward Secret Santa
Even with his best efforts, the attempts to fix this one didn’t help too much and the guy pretty much summed the card up perfectly by ending it “Awkward Holiday Greetings.”

An insult more than a compliment
Sometimes at work you’re reminded of your loved one, and just want to send them a text telling them you’ve thought of them and maybe even proudly talked about them at lunch.
An insult more than a compliment
Such a text might be quite cute, especially if you get it on Valentine’s day. This card, on the other hand, is not. We’re not sure what’s worse, the card itself or the fact someone thought this was a good choice for Valentine’s Day.

A clever card twist
People find different things scary, and we can think of quite a few scenarios when the front of this card would be a lot more terrifying than a more traditional Halloween card.
A clever card twist
We hope the guy who received this one didn’t pass out before turning the page and realizing the whole thing was just a joke. The girl who gave it to him has a pretty savage sense of humor, but she should probably prepare her self for the inevitable retaliation.

Happy platonic birthday
Considering how long it must have taken to edit this Valentine’s Day card into a birthday card appropriate for a friend, we kind of wonder if it wouldn’t have been a lot easier to just buy a regular birthday card…
Happy platonic birthday
Also, did he really have to cross out all the I love you’s? There’s nothing wrong with saying I love you to a friend. And since Sheldon made sure to add the word platonic in his greeting, there’s no risk his friend would get the wrong idea.

Sorry mom…
Certain difficult events in life there are no greeting cards for, and maybe for good reason. In this case, a young man wanted to send his mom some words of encouragement, after finding out his father had been unfaithful.
Sorry mom…
His options were naturally pretty limited, so he settled for this very heartfelt card – which he found in the terminally ill section. Maybe he didn’t really know what to do, but we’re sure his mother appreciated the gesture.

A very indifferent greeting
Not everyone thinks birthdays are that exciting, or even worth celebrating at all. This friend is clearly one of those people who would rather not be invited to your birthday celebration. But unlike most on this list, this person at least managed to get a card that’s right for the occasion.
A very indifferent greeting
Sure it’s not touching, poetic or cheerful – but it’s completely accurate, and even has a drawing of a cake on it. The bar really isn’t very high on this list.

Dad getting called out
Pretty much every married woman with children out there can relate to this card, so no wonder it became a bestseller. Because let’s face it, most of the presents and cards we’ve received from our parents over the years have in fact been planned, purchased, wrapped and written by mommy dearest.
Dad getting called out
Dad might scribble his name in the bottom in the end, but usually he has neither read the card nor seen the present before we do.

Don’t get well soon
In an ideal world, our friends only want what’s best for us. But in reality, some of our friends might be secret frenemies. Or friends with a very dark sense of humor, like this one.
Don’t get well soon
Out shopping for the perfect get well soon card for his friend, he stumbled across one he just couldn’t resist. Hopefully his friend shares his sense of humor, because when you’re sick or recovering after surgery you definitely need a reason to laugh.

Ambiguous encouragement
We’re not quite sure what would prompt someone to go looking for a card like this, buy it and then give it to someone who is probably already very well aware they messed up….
Ambiguous encouragement
It’s also surprising this card exists in the first place, considering so many people on this list couldn’t find even the most basic, broadly themed greeting cards. We hope next time this guy opt for a card a little more kind to give a friend who’s messed up.

A birthday card that isn’t even a card
This dad might deserve first prize for worst birthday card ever. Why? Because it’s not even a card – it’s one of the dividers from the greeting card section in the bookstore.
A birthday card that isn’t even a card
So basically this man went to look for a funny birthday card for his child, but because he didn’t find one he liked enough decided to give up altogether and get none. Instead he essentially stole a divider and scribbled a quick greeting. Just. Wow.

The witty little sister
Isn’t it just like baby sisters to be the clown of the family? When one young woman was organizing her father’s 53rd birthday celebration, she knew her youngest sister wouldn’t be able to come home from college to attend the party.
The witty little sister
But instead she had made her promise to send a sweet greeting card that would arrive just on time. Well, at least it was a card – but sweet is maybe not the best way to describe it.

The opposite of Teacher’s pet
When you’re an elementary school teacher, having your students say and write cute things is just one of many perks that come with working around kids. But once in a while, they surprise you in unpleasant ways too.
The opposite of Teacher’s pet
This teacher assumed she had gotten a birthday greeting from one of her students, but once she opened it she quickly realized it was more of a stern reminder to not think she is anyone special just because she had a birthday.

When a four-year-old picks the card
There is nothing more adorable than having your little niece or nephew make a birthday card for you. But as it turns out, having them pick one out in the store doesn’t always end as well.
When a four-year-old picks the card
This woman’s four-year-old niece obviously can’t read yet, so when she was given the task of picking out a greeting card for her dear auntie, she made her decision based only on the pictures. A dog in a party hat? Perfect!
