Couple finds lottery ticket in a book, race to see if they can still cash in
We all love to have a discussion on what we would do if we won the lottery. What would we spend it on? What paradise location would we jet off to? Would we buy a new house or tons of new cars?
As much as we dream about what we would buy, we have to face the facts. Statistically speaking, we are five times more likely to be struck by lightning than to win the lottery jackpot. Yet, despite the odds, a lot of us keep going back for another chance, dreaming, hoping and wishing for that one golden ticket.
However, sometimes dreams do become reality! We’re always seeing the latest jackpot winner in the news, holding up their giant cheque with huge grinning smug smiles on their faces. Are we jealous? Yes, we are. This is the story of one particular couple who found out they won nearly a year after they bought the ticket – days before the expiry date. Now that is what you call lucky. But would they be able to cash it in time?
A Canadian couple
The two winners in question are a Canadian couple called Nicole Pedneault and Roger Larocque. Before their win, they were just your average people, plodding along and singing a song to this thing we call life.

However, their bog standard lives were about to be turned upside down, inside out, on their head and turned into gold. Literally. If you want an incentive to start playing the lottery, this is it.

Lottery ticket
Nicole and Roger were avid Lottery players. They would often buy themselves a weekly ticket, glancing at the numbers in anticipation every time they were read out, which of course would always lead on to be a massive disappointment. But still they would try their luck, with a niggling part in the back of their mind every time asking them – “what if?”.
Lottery ticket
In early 2018, Nicole and Roger purchased themselves a Loto-Quebec ticket in order to celebrate their Valentine’s Day together. However, the draw date wasn’t for another two months, so they had to wait a while until the numbers were announced. After putting it to the back of their minds, they went on to completely forget they even bought it.

Forgotten
After buying the ticket, Nicole thought that it would be a good idea to store it in a safe place. Who knows whether it would be a winning ticket? So she wanted to keep it somewhere that it wouldn’t get damaged or lost. She chose a book that always sat on their bookshelf, tucking the ticket inside one of the pages so it wouldn’t get creased.
Forgotten
With it now safe, sound and tucked away, Nicole and Roger went about their lives, eventually forgetting that the ticket was even there waiting to be checked. The due date of April 5th passed two months later, and then more months passed too. The ticket still remained within the book, lost and forgotten about.

Nearly a year later
However, the ticket was about to remembered once and for all. Nearly a whole year later, Nicole began searching through some of the items on the bookshelf, when she noticed something sticking out of one of the books she was lining up.
Nearly a year later
She opened up the marked page and saw the lottery ticket still sitting inside, waiting for someone to retrieve it and check the numbers. Nicole had entirely forgotten that she even bought it. She took the ticket out of the book and put it on the side to check the numbers a little bit later. There was no real rush as the chances of them winning were pretty slim anyway. At this point, it was just another dud ticket.

Checking their winnings
In the afternoon, Nicole decided it was time to check the numbers of the date the ticket was bought for. She noticed that the expiry date was just days away, so it was a bit of luck that she found it today. But still, Nicole knew that they had no real chance of winning.
Checking their winnings
Surely someone would have claimed the prize already? She pulled out her laptop and opened up the website for Loto-Quebec. After clicking on the date for April 5th, 2018, Nicole started reading the numbers on the screen and then glancing down at the ticket in her hand. The numbers were matching up. Each and every one of them. She thought she might be dreaming, or reading it wrong.

Unbelievable
Her heart started pounding ever so fast as she checked the numbers. She couldn’t quite believe what she was seeing. She double-checked the numbers, and then again, and then again once more. Her eyes weren’t playing any tricks on her.
Unbelievable
The numbers were definitely matching up. She read the terms and conditions on the back of the ticket and everything seemed valid. A sudden sense of realization came over her. They had won! They were rich!

In the nick of time
Not only could Nicole not believe that they actually won, but she couldn’t believe that she found the ticket just in the nick of time before the year expiry date. Imagine if she hadn’t seen the ticket poking out the side of the book…
In the nick of time
Nicole or Roger would have found it years later, realizing that at one point they were millionaires, unaware of their win before they lost it all. Nicole was astounded. She couldn’t comprehend what was happening.

A grandson to thank
Through all the excitement and joy, Nicole and Roger had one person to thank, and that was their grandson. That week he had come to them asking for some memorabilia for his upcoming show and tell.
A grandson to thank
In response to his request, Nicole went searching through all of their belongings, somehow luckily coming across the lottery ticket just in time to claim the prize. It looks as though their grandson will certainly be getting a big birthday present this year.

Unclaimed prizes
The total prize fund they won topped $1,000,000 Canadian dollars ($750,000 USD). Nicole and Roger were overwhelmed thinking about what they could potentially spend it on. There were so many options. But they were very nearly unable to claim the prize.
Unclaimed prizes
According to Loto-Quebec, if the winner of the draw hasn’t responded within a year, then the unclaimed prize will then be put into the rollover fund for other winners to get instead. Phew!

Money in the bank
So what are Nicole and Roger planning to spend their big earnings on? Well, the list is endless. But the main priority for them is to splash out on their five sons and grandchildren.
Money in the bank
Roger has said he plans to treat himself to a new car too In the meantime, they plan on going out for a big meal to celebrate, specifically for a giant poutine with extra gravy and extra cheese. What a way to celebrate, eh!

A Louisiana couple
There are hundreds of lottery winners who crop up in the news each year, and some of them have similar stories of luck, just like Roger and Nicole. One particular couple who were very fortunate is a Louisiana couple called Harold and Tina Ehrenberg.
A Louisiana couple
It all started when the Louisianians bought a lottery ticket in summer 2018, hoping to win big with the huge upcoming jackpot. However, just like Roger and Nicole, they too forgot they even had the ticket.

Finding the ticket
Summer turned into autumn, and autumn turned into winter, and come November, the couple were ready to celebrate Thanksgiving with their family, unaware that there was a winning ticket sitting unclaimed under their noses.
Finding the ticket
Their children were coming over for the holidays, and so Tina carried out a spring clean of the house. But then she came across the ticket, which had been sitting in the drawer of their bedroom nightstand for 6 months now.

Lucky
Tina decided to check the numbers straight away, just in case. Much to her surprise, the numbers matched up! She ran to hubby Harold screaming with joy, completely blown away by what she was seeing right before her very eyes.
Lucky
At first, she thought it was a joke ticket that Harold was trying to prank her with, but Harold was just as surprised as her. They rang the lottery officials up promptly, and they were told they were just two weeks away from the ticket expiring.

In denial
Harold and Tina have spoken out about how they kept checking the numbers over and over again, expecting something to stand in the way of them being able to claim it. This was just too good to be true. They were in complete denial about it.
In denial
Tina couldn’t quite believe that in her hand was a lottery ticket worth $1,800,000. They were overwhelmed with happiness. This was going to change their lives forever, and they were entirely grateful.

A happy retirement
They have vowed to spend the money wisely, not throwing any of it away on pointless stuff like you so often see nowadays with many lottery winners. Instead, they plan to put most of the earnings away into a savings account, ready and waiting for their retirement.
A happy retirement
They commented saying they don’t have any big trips planned just yet, but the most exciting thing to look forward to is when they can deposit the cheque.

A Bolton criminal
Another interesting story that has come to light recently is that of a British man from the town of Bolton called Jon-Ross Watson. After buying a Lotto scratch card, he was amazed to find out he had won a whopping £4,000,000 (around $5,030,000).
A Bolton criminal
However, after going on a four-day bender to celebrate his winnings with pal Mark Goodram, things started to go wrong for the winner. Unfortunately, he was denied the winnings.

Winning ticket
The ticket was bought for £10 at a local supermarket in London during the 2019 Easter bank holiday. However, after attempting to claim the prize through the Lotto officials, Jon-Ross and pal Mark were denied the prize.
Winning ticket
Apparently, they had fears that the ticket was bought with a stolen debit card because the transaction evidence showed the payment was carried out with a card not issued to his name. You can only imagine how disappointed he must have felt.

Denied
After Lotto refused to pay out, the pair were lost in how to react or what to do about the matter. Their stories have fluttered between one and the other. One minute they claim to have no knowledge on the card being stolen, and the next minute they suggest a mystery-man named John was the cardholder – a pal who wanted to remain anonymous.
Denied
They initially called the police claiming they were owed the money, however the authorities refused to get involved.

Criminals
Jon-Ross and Mark claim that their past involvement with the law is the reason they are not receiving the money. They believe they are being discriminated against due to their history.
Criminals
Jon-Ross spoke to the press commenting that “Lotto officials are completely messing us both around, most likely because they know me and Mark have a lively past and have been in prison. Well, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t get our money. That’s too bad!”

Life ruined
Jon-Ross also claims that the whole ordeal has left him with severe mental health issues, unable to return to his hometown of Bolton due to the constant stream of abuse he receives. His ‘win’ hit the headlines almost instantly, meaning his name and face are well known around his hometown.
Life ruined
According to him, he cannot walk down the street in Bolton without being mocked by the public, or being shouted at by strangers calling him a scumbag or a loser.

Mocked
Neither Jon-Ross or Mark have received any payment, and it is unlikely that they ever will due to the evidence against them that the card used was clearly not theirs. Jon-Ross has also spoken out about how he now feels depressed all the time, thinking about the life he could be leading.
Mocked
He commented saying: “I could and should be in Las Vegas, living it up. But Lotto won’t cough up. They need to pay us what we are owed or else.”

Counting your blessings
Playing the lottery or buying a scratch card can bring some absolute joy to your life. But just make sure you pay for the ticket with your own money, or the fact of the matter is, your dreams will be taken straight out of your hands.
Counting your blessings
Next time you decide to take part in the draw, just stop for a moment to think about what you would do if you did win. The odds certainly aren’t in your favor…but someone has to win! It could be you.
